Rhetorical Précis for "End Homework Now"
In the article “End Homework Now” (2001), Etta Kralovec and John Buell claim
that the practice of assigning homework is not an effective teaching method because its
negative effects outweigh its benefits. Kralovec and Buell support their claims by
providing examples of how homework disrupts families, overburdens children and limits
learning and by dispelling myths about the benefits of homework and providing
alternative practices that would lead to improvement in student achievement. The
authors’ purpose is to make the reader question a practice that is a trademark of the U.S.
education system and decide whether it is conducive to creating a “smarter” student.
They seem to be speaking to the entire educational community: administrators, teachers,
students and parents.
Dear Teacher Marissa,
ReplyDeleteGreat job incorporating technology in your Rhetorical Writing lesson right from its beginning. You got everybody actively involved participating via their laptops. Your clear and concise rubric enabled all of “your students of varying grades” to understand what was expected of them. Your techniques all demonstrated best practices and your lesson progression was carefully scaffolded for everyone to experience success.
I especially liked the way you included everyone in the ongoing discussion calling on the somewhat reluctant to share students. It was very enlightening to me as a primary teacher to see what lessons with high school children look like and entail and a thank you for a well planned and superbly executed lesson! Patti

ReplyDeleteRhetorical (Art of Persuasion) Precis (Summary)
Aloha, Marissa!
I learned some new words today! It was interesting to see the format suggested to prepare this form of summarizing an article or event.
Best Practices I observed include:
• Definition of what a “Rhetorical Precis” is.
• Time to read the piece to be worked with
• Whole Group practice
• Partner practice
• Opportunity to reflect on overall process
• Sharing
I think this might be an interesting way to review any number of “current events” and to share thoughts on same … or to start discussion on current event or reading assignment. Could also be a piece of a very interesting writing a book report process.
Great job!

Marissa,
ReplyDeleteI learned about summary and the involvement of writing a rhetorical precis. For high school students, I can see that this is a good preparation for college. A simpler version could be introduced to middle school students.

Aloha Marissa---
ReplyDeleteMahalo nui loa for your informative perspective on a summary. I didn't realize that so much information could be placed in 4 sentences. I was especially moved by the complex rubric, quality of artyicles that were in the interest level of our diverse teens today. Your best practices were the constant feedback, your group participation and high school perspective of teaching. Mahalo nui loa---Doreen
